Dew claw removal

Saw these posted on another forum and it struck a cord. I have a dog that has his dew claws and they never need to be trimmed...

Dew Claws Do Have a Purpose!

Everyone talks about the downside of spaying and neutering too young. This is a good consideration as well.

I don't buy it. That dog was hopping on the ground anyways. Dogs get experienced. They learn how to balance their weight. I HATE dew claws on dogs. Especially poorly behaved dogs.

This is probably the more relevant piece.

Like I said, I have a dog that very prominently shows he uses his when running by virtue of wear. I have one without them and she generally needs a rub down post run where the claws used to be.

I'll also say that a torn dew claw is a mess but I think it's rare. I've had my dogs get slashed tongues, shredded tails, dislocated ribs, one dislocated pelvis, shredded ears, cut pads all while hunting, but never a torn dew claw.

I don't get how a floppy extra appendage is helping on the ice, its not stiff except for the nail. And it doesn't even look like its touching the ice in the slow motion frames.  :dunno:
